The Adventures of a Twin Mom

Motherhood and Travel Blog

Exclusive Pumping 101

title

I’ve had several ladies ask me about exclusively pumping, so I decided to write a blog post about this! Honestly, I was worried I wouldn’t make enough milk for my twins, but it turns out that I had no reason to be! Not only do I make enough to feed them, but I have an entire deep freezer filled with milk (1,500 ounces so far) and my babies are only 3 months old.

Disclaimer: I am not an expert; I am just sharing what works for me! This post is LONG, I titled all the sections, so just read the sections you’re interested in. I hope this helps!!

Why I Chose to Exclusively Pump

I do believe FED IS BEST!  However, I did hope that I could give my babies breast milk because of all the benefits for the child(ren) and for the mother too!  That being said, I’ve never had a desire to breastfeed.  I think it’s great that a lot of women want to have this special bond with their babies, but I knew I’d already feel bonded with my babies and didn’t feel the need to do this.  Plus, I love that my husband can help with the feeding and I love knowing exactly how much my twins are eating.

Equipment Needed/Used:

  • Pump- I use the Spectra S2 Pump and I LOVE it! There is no doubt that I have an oversupply of milk naturally, but I really believe this pump helps with it. It is comparable to Hospital Grade pumps.  I also love that it has a light to help you see what you’re doing when it’s dark.
  • 2 Pumping bras (I recommend 2, so you have 1 to use while washing the other)
  • 6 Flanges- I recommend this many in case you don’t feel like washing them right after you use them. You can also keep the flanges in the fridge and only wash them once a day as long as they are cold.  I do this on the days that I have work!
  • 6 Valves
  • Bottles- I use Avent Natural bottles because they fit on my pump and my babies love them. I recommend at least 8 of these!
  • Storage bags- You might want to check to see if your insurance covers these, a lot of insurance companies do!
  • Sarah Wells Pumping Bag– This is a lifesaver!! I use this whenever I leave the house and need to pump which is quite often! It is PERFECTION!
  • Sarah Wells Pumparoo– This has a wet section for your wet flanges, you can put those in there and place the Pumparoo in the fridge, so you don’t have to wash after each session. It also has a dry section to put clean items in and a detachable mat.
  • Dishpan– for cleaning bottles, flanges, and the valves. I will explain this towards the end of the post!
  • Dishwashing Liquid– We use Seventh Generation because it’s nontoxic and hypoallergenic.
  • Cooling Racks– We do not use the normal bottle drying racks because with twins there are SOOO many bottles, flanges, nipples that we’d need a ton of them. We actually use these  cooling racks and we’ve found it’s perfect for drying bottles. I will explain this process towards the end of this blog post! 🙂

How Often to Pump

Initially, when the twins were born I pumped every 3 hours for 15 minutes (SO EXHAUSTING). It took me a few weeks to realize that it didn’t matter if I pumped 8 times a day or 5 times a day, the total amount of milk that I produced was the exact same!  Now, I just pump 4-5 times a day for 15 minutes.

Pumping Process

On my Spectra pump, I pump for 2 minutes on Cycle 70 Vacuum 05 and then I switch to Cycle 38 Vacuum L10 for 13 minutes.

Cleaning Bottles and Pump Parts

One of my fabulous nurses at the hospital showed me this trick and it makes cleaning bottles and the flanges super easy!

  1. Use a dishpan and fill with hot water and dish washing liquid
  2. Rinse out the bottles and place in to the hot soapy water
  3. Let sit for about 15 minutes
  4. Rinse everything out with hot water
  5. Place on a drying rack5

Occasionally, I throw the bottles and nipples in the dishwasher for an extra deep clean.

How Long is Milk Good For?

Spoiled milk makes me very nervous!  I always use the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations:

Room Temperature: 4-6 hours

Insulated Cooler: 24 hours

Refrigerator: 5 days

Freezer compartment of a refrigerator: 3-6 months

Deep freezer: 6-12 months

Freezing Milk

I store my milk in the fridge until I have enough to fill a 4 ounce bag.  Once I have 4 ounces, I pour it into a milk bag and place it flat on a shelf in the freezer.

2

Once the milk is frozen, I place in the Tupperware pictured below until I have 12 bags of milk (48 ounces).

1

Once I hit 48 ounces, I place all 12 bags in a gallon size bag. I seal the bag, write the dates on it, and place it in my deep freezer.

3

Increasing Milk Production

I do have an oversupply,  but sadly I don’t have any tips. I believe my pump plays a part in this and I just got lucky with the milk production.  I don’t take any supplements or do anything like that.  I do drink a lot of water (I always have), I take a Prenatal vitamin every single morning, and I eat 2 donuts for breakfast every single day (lol). 😉

I hope this helps someone on their pumping journey!  Good luck!

How to Survive Your First Month as a Breast Pumping Mom (of Twins!)

This blog was originally posted on https://sarahwellsbags.com/blogs/news/how-to-survive-your-first-month-as-a-breast-pumping-mom-of-twins. Cover1st_grande

Wow… It has been a crazy month! I’ve known for nine months I was going to be a mother of twins, but until I brought those two adorable babies home, I don’t think it really hit me. But I made it!

I survived my first month as a twin mom– an exclusively pumping twin mom, nonetheless! I learned so much along the way, what worked for our family and what didn’t.

So, straight from the trenches, here are my top five tips for surviving your first month as a breast pumping mom of one or multiple babies.

Schedule: Have a schedule and stick with it!

Usually, newborns need to eat every 3 hours, so come up with a plan that works best for your family. For us, it was feedings every 3 AM/PM, 6 AM/PM, 9 AM/PM, and 12 AM/PM. This way, there were no questions: I knew I needed to pump 20 minutes before a feeding, and we knew we had to finish up anything else we were in the middle of to feed the twins at our predetermined times.

Sleep: Sleep is so important!

Personally, I become a total grump when I’m tired and don’t think clearly. On top of that, after just giving birth, your body NEEDS rest! I know everyone always says, “sleep when the babies sleep,” and I know you can’t always do that because there are chores to do and you need to shower at some point, BUT seriously, sleep whenever you can.

Another thing that helped me was to “take off” at least one feeding session a day while my husband fed the twins formula instead so that I could catch up on a little sleep. Any bit of extra sleep plus little naps will make a world of difference!

Be Organized: Make your first month so much easier!

How did I do get organized? I spent my entire pregnancy preparing. By the time I delivered, my husband and I had everything we needed already purchased: diapers, formula (we had to supplement for a while until I produced enough milk to feed both babies), clothes, wipes, beds, and more. By preparing for what to do before you go into labor, we didn’t have to run out to buy anything once we came home from the hospital.

I also recommend doing the following tasks before heading to the hospital:

  1. Pay or schedule all your bills for the upcoming month or two,
  2. Make sure there is food in the fridge and freezer,
  3. Keep your house (at least mostly) clean,
  4. Have your hospital bag packed and ready,
  5. Know how your breast pump works,
  6. Have your newborn photographer booked,
  7. Choose a pediatrician, and
  8. Clean and set-up all of your baby gear.

If you can think of anything else to make your life easier, do it NOW.

Ask for Help: People will WANT to help anyway!

Being a new mom, first-time or experienced, bringing home a new baby or babies can be overwhelming. I wanted to do it all and be “Super Mom, ” but I learned real fast that wasn’t possible because:

  1. I was recovering,
  2. I really had no clue what I was doing, and
  3. I am human.

That being said, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Seriously, whether it is your mom, your cousin, your best friend, or even your neighbor… people want to help! Who doesn’t love cuddling with a baby for a while?

Take Care of YOU: I can’t stress this enough!

I definitely outdid myself over the first week or two. I had a lot of help (thanks to my husband and my mom), but I still wanted to do everything I possibly could. The truth is, I was still recovering, and I went up and down way too many stairs and leaned in ways I shouldn’t have in the process. This extra activity made me sorer and probably slowed down my recovery a bit.

You need to remember, no matter how your baby or babies came into this world, your body is going through major recovery and will be for a while. Enjoy this time; you don’t get it back. Eat yummy food, binge-watch some of your favorite shows, sleep as much as possible, relax often, and cuddle with your baby or babies!

When I look back on the past month, I just smile from ear-to-ear.

Was it, at times, exhausting? Absolutely! Did I question if I was doing things “the right way?” Totally! Did I worry all. the. time? Yep!

But I learned so much and not only did I survive, but I LOVED my first month as a twin mom. Then and today, I look at these two babies and think, “How did I get so lucky?” And I carry that feeling with me as I continue to navigate this thing called #momlife.

8 Things Not to Say to a Woman Pregnant with Twins

I really enjoyed coming up with this list of things twin moms or twin moms-to-be would rather not hear… Trust me, moms of twins will hear it all, even the not so comforting or kind comments.  Get ready to laugh and/or have your mouth drop open. These things have all been said to me!

1-3952139521

  1. “Better you than me. Your life is over!” I was left speechless when someone said this to me.  My biggest life goal was to be a mom and to me, a new chapter in my life was beginning and I could not have been more excited!
  1. “Are they natural?” I wish I would’ve said “No, they are imaginary!”  The truth is, I am proud to share my infertility journey with others but I would never say my twins are unnatural; they are healthy and perfect.  My husband and I just needed a little extra help to bring them into this world.
  1. “Are you having a C-Section?” I know people are just curious because twins aren’t super common but this question is by far the most frequent question we received and one that drove us up the wall.  It’s completely awkward talking to those you aren’t close to about having a vaginal birth. My reserved husband recently made a comment about how often he said the word “vaginal” because people asked this so much!   What people don’t realize, is about half of twin pregnancies end up needing a C-section but there is still a 50% chance of bringing the babies into this world the old fashioned way.
  1. “You get two for the price of one!” This could not be further from the truth! We needed two of everything, not to mention our twins came after years of infertility and 3 rounds of In-vitro (IVF), costing us tens of thousands of dollars.  The only thing I can think of that we saved money on is the hospital bill.

5. “A boy and girl, you’re done!” My husband and I are probably done having kids but our family planning isn’t anyone else’s business. There are tons of couples who have twins and want more kids in the future.  No one should assume how many kids a couple wants.

6. “You only have to be pregnant once! You’re so blessed!” Yes, I am extremely blessed to have my miracle babies but in reality, twin pregnancy was not a cake walk.  There were so many things I had to deal with that I most likely wouldn’t have if it was a singleton pregnancy.  I thought for sure pregnancy would be glamorous, that I would have the cutest maternity wardrobe, and it would be an amazing 9 months.  In all honestly, I was miserable for almost the entire pregnancy and I wore my husband’s t-shirts towards the end of my pregnancy because I could not get comfortable. Twin pregnancy was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever put my body through.

36 Weeks

  1. “That’s too bad they aren’t identical.” This statement really confused me! After all the hardships we went through to get pregnant, we prayed for twins but we never once prayed for identical or fraternal twins, we just wanted healthy and happy babies!  I’m not sure why someone would want identical over fraternal or vice versa.  I think most moms would agree, a healthy and happy child or children is all that matters! 🙂

8. “How much weight have you gained?” Do I need to explain this one?

If you’re pregnant with twins, my biggest advice is to ignore others ignorant comments and just enjoy the process.  You were chosen to be a twin mom and it’s going to be an amazing and rewarding journey!  If you know someone pregnant with twins, just congratulate them!

Hawaii Babymoon

We recently celebrated our babymoon in Hawaii!!  We didn’t have very many choices while selecting a location because the Zika Virus is everywhere right now!  Thankfully Hawaii hasn’t had one case of Zika!

We started off our trip by spending 4 days and nights in Maui.  We rented a condo in Lahaina, the condominium was called Lahaina Shores.

1

This was was the view from our condo.  It was right on the beach and walking distance to the adorable town of Lahaina.

Tip: if you go to Maui, a rental car is a must because everything is pretty spread out.

DSC01910.JPG

Our first full day we spent at Black Rock Beach.

GOPR9015.JPG

The snorkeling here was to die for!

GOPR9008.JPG

Hi twin bump!

DSC01932.JPG

The next day we spent at Kapalua Beach.  This was a very small beach but it was very cozy and beautiful.

dsc01942

Our last two days we spent at Napili Beach, this was by far our favorite beach in Maui (exactly why we spent 2 days here).

We spent every day in Maui lounging at the beach and the evenings were spent exploring downtown Lahaina.

dsc01947dsc01948

We went shopping and ate dinner in town every night, it was perfect!

Our final five days in Hawaii were spent on Oahu specifically Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.  We were nervous about Waikiki because it’s in the middle of a big city.  We realized fast that we had no reason to be nervous, we LOVED Oahu!  It was our favorite island.

DSC01953.JPG

We got lei’d by the sweetest little Hawaiian lady when we arrived at the Honolulu Airport.

DSC01954.JPG

We stayed at the Hilton Waikiki.  If we go back, we will stay here again.  The hotel is beautiful and just a couple blocks from the beach.

DSC01961.JPG

One morning, we rented a car and went to the Dole Pineapple Plantation. This was one of my favorite activities from our trip.

DSC01963.JPG

We took the plantation train tour.

DSC01970.JPG

And of course we tried some DELICIOUS Dole Whip! YUM!!

DSC01962.jpg

We stopped at Pearl Harbor, always a must see in Hawaii.

DSC02016.JPG

One evening we went to the luau at the Hale Koa Hotel!

DSC02007.JPG

 We had an absolute blast.

DSC02017.JPG

The dinner was delicious!

The entertainers did a great job of keeping everyone entertained throughout the show.

dsc01976dsc01980

We spent one afternoon snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.  This is a marine park where you can swim and snorkel.  It is beautiful and a must do in Oahu!

Judd climbed to the top of Diamond Head after snorkeling!

DSC01995.JPG

How beautiful are these views?

DSC01960.JPG

Every evening we wandered around the restaurant/shopping area in Waikiki.  We were amazed at how upscale this area was!

DSC01999.JPG

Our last two days were spent lounging on Waikiki Beach. Tip: The best section of Waikiki Beach is directly in front of the Hilton Waikiki.  They have coves so you can relax and not worry about waves.

DSC02001.JPG

We rented chairs and umbrellas both days, the rental prices were astronomical but those two days of pure relaxation were exactly what we needed!

It was the perfect babymoon!! 🙂

Five Cheese Ziti- Olive Garden Copy Cat

One of my favorite meals is the Five Cheese Ziti Al Forno from Olive Garden.  I have been trying to come up with a recipe that is comparable for years now…  Not only did I come up with one that is comparable, I think my recipe is better than Olive Garden’s dish!  It also only uses 3 cheeses compared to Olive Garden’s 5 cheeses.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 1 (15 oz) jar of Alfredo Sauce- I prefer Ragu
  • 1 (24 oz) jar of Marinara sauce- I prefer Prego
  • 5 cups Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup of Parmesan cheese
  • ¾ cup of Ricotta cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
  2. Cook penne pasta with the dente instructions
  3. Over medium heat in a large pot, place the following: alfredo sauce, marinara sauce, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, ½ cup parmesan cheese, and all of the ricotta. Stir
  4. Once the sauce is warm, add the pasta and stir until well mixed
  5. Transfer pasta to the 9×13 casserole dish/pan
  6. Top with the rest of the parmesan and mozzarella cheese
  7. Bake for 20 minutes
  8. Enjoy!! 🙂

Note: You could also add ground beef/turkey or grilled chicken to this!
